History Pickets for Sorrowing Growth

History Pickets for Sorrowing Growth

by Elizabeth Stelling

Boys

can’t get over

how it goes on and on and on and around

nothing,
each

beautifully handcrafted post
pointing to the blue sky,

so much space between

before

the next one
tells a new story,

do fences keep things out or hold things back.

Back

on the bus

school girls stare out the window at a woman

stuck,
in time

above

the stoop

laundry sways slowly with the wind

while,
her neighbor

is cleaning a switch pulled from the rose bush.

Back

on the hill

just off to the left
there on the ground

another picket lays waiting for adventure.

beyond

the eye’s view,
haunting

a river

runs alongside an old standing pine

where

a house

had been built;

its ghost remains fencing off freedom.

-refers from Christopher Allen’s photography Fences
