Form 29-D

Form 29-D

By Janeen Rastall

You dream
you host a cocktail party
in your downtown loft.
You save the plastic cutlery,
pass oysters on a tray,
chat about Rachmaninoff.
Your guests hide the shells
in couch crevices,
and behind the purple drapes.
You make a kitchen run,[1]
step through the cockpit door,
shove a cart of clinking bottles
between the airplane seats.
You glance down.
Your shoes and sex
have been transformed.

[1] The Agency has extracted pieces of your dream. Segments were clipped and filed under your name. To request a transcript of your missing REM sleep, complete and submit Form 29-D.

-refers to the words “dream,” “door,” “bottle” and “sleep” in the story Poets at the Boarding House by Craig Fishbane
