it’s whatever you make of it

it’s whatever you make of it

by Nancy Chen Long

our first pet was a Siamese

cat

it was

cold and standoffish

like my mother

my father always wanted

siamese cats

both perfect

and imperfect

my parents

who obeyed the stand-in

pinch-hitters

for god

said it’s easier sometimes

to command the flesh

rather than control

the mind

they said

it’s whatever you make of it

-refers to the words “Siamese” and “cat” in Dan Shapiro’s poem Fitting In
